“Floreat” by Aileen Lanuza

Galerie Joaquin Rockwell

January 26 – February 4, 2026

Derived from the Latin floreat, meaning to flourish, “Floreat” presents Aileen Lanuza’s inquiry into growth as a lived, interior condition. Rather than depicting flourishing as abundance or excess, the works in this exhibition approach it as a gradual and often quiet process—one that unfolds through endurance, self-awareness, and renewal. The figures in these paintings do not inhabit natural settings; they are formed through them, suggesting a symbiotic relationship between the human body and organic life.

Throughout the exhibition, floral elements function as more than symbolic decoration. Petals, blossoms, and foliage partially obscure faces and bodies, shaping the compositions and guiding the viewer’s attention. This visual strategy introduces moments of interruption and withholding, where identity is suggested rather than fully revealed. In doing so, Lanuza positions growth as something inward and ongoing, rather than performative. The obscured gaze, recurring across several works, resists direct engagement and instead directs the viewer toward reflection.

The smaller-scale works operate as distilled studies of growth. Single blooms, poised between bud and full opening, echo the figurative paintings’ attention to process rather than culmination. These works emphasize temporality, reminding the viewer that flourishing is neither fixed nor guaranteed, but contingent on care and persistence.

Taken together, “Floreat” frames flourishing as a condition shaped by vulnerability and resolve. Lanuza’s figures remain grounded, introspective, and composed, embodying growth not as spectacle, but as a sustained presence. The exhibition invites viewers to consider flourishing as a continuous negotiation, rooted in patience, transformation, and strength.
