ARTIST PROFILE

Amador Barquilla

Amador Barquilla

Drawing inspiration from both his hometowns, self-taught artist Amador Barquilla (b. 1984) is ever-inspired by the sceneries of his harmonious provincial life in Albay and Laguna.

Illustrious mountains are most prominent in his works, serving as an integral backdrop for the humble rural spirit: figures of Filipino families and children depict the simple yet joyous Filipino everyday setting such as playing around the neighborhood, strolling at the marketplace, or celebrating a fiesta. Modest as he is, Barquilla pays homage to the peaceful and uncomplicated moments in life, aiming to capture and immortalize these scenes through his self-acquired artistic skill and creativity.

His passion for the arts developed during high school, eventually earning an apprenticeship to artist and sculptor Jerry Morada in Mabitac, Laguna. Through years of dedicated practice, Amador gained recognition from notable art competitions and projects such as the Honorable Mention at GSIS Art Competition (2005), a commissioned project for Pan de Manila’s (2013) Christmas packaging designs, as well as numerous solo and group exhibits in galleries and independent artist groups around Manila.

Working as a full-time artist, Barquilla’s works continue to breathe a sense of unpretentious, reserved spirit – his distinguished art style of the traditional Filipino life remains remarkable among art collectors and admirers.
