“Portraits of Yesterday” by Almer Moneda at Galerie Joaquin BGC

The adage “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” attributed to philosopher George Santayana, highlights the critical role of historical memory in collective progress. Serving as a guidepost for future generations, it is a reminder of what it means to be united under a shared identity, the foundation upon which all collective growth is rooted.

For “Portraits of Yesterday”, visual artist Almer Moneda presents an extensive inquiry into identity, heritage, and culture realized through his ingenious juxtapositions of black and white subjects amidst conspicuously bold colors. Recounting distinctly Filipino narratives that dissect time and its inevitable passage, Moneda’s penchant for scenes of the past inspired him to turn to still and rested subjects, captured in seemingly mundane settings that reveal stark and quiet memories of an epoch, a weaving repository of private lives and communal histories.

Almer Moneda’s works serve as conduits that pay homage to the days gone by. It draws from the wellspring of collective memory that nourishes our sense of identity in a world fragmented by differences. Almer Moneda’s “Portraits of Yesterday” is a scenic orchestra of memoirs, communicated through visually resonant depictions of early life. A narrative where the human experience and its sensibilities converge into an alluring symphony of cultural identity, weaving us gradually through the corridors of time.

“Portraits of Yesterday” by Almer Moneda will run from April 9 – 19, 2024. ? Galerie Joaquin BGC is located on the Upper Ground Floor, One Bonifacio High Street Mall, 5th Ave. Corner 28th Street, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
