“Asteroid City” by Farley Del Rosario

The question of whether we are alone in the vast cosmos has captivated human minds for centuries, transcending scientific inquiry to delve into the realms of philosophy and existential contemplation. It challenges us to ponder our place in the universe, questioning not only the existence of extraterrestrial life but the very essence of our human experience.

For Farley Del Rosario’s latest exhibition “Asteroid City”, the artist brings together a collection of works derived from his playful understanding of the human condition. Flying us this time out of space, Del Rosario’s figures depict various levels of interactions–either with the self or with other motley cast of characters that ultimately endow the beholder with a sense of belongingness and community. In some of his pieces, characters can be seen bearing vintage toy guns as if in warfare. These depictions, however, serve as visual conduits only, employed by the artist to reveal metaphorical allegories that allude to internal and external conflicts, experienced and imparted by the characters. Together, the stark contrasts between these juxtapositions of resolute kinship amid a space realize an impactful narrative that explores our quest for truth and identity.

Further, his stylized depictions of notable figures like Banksy, KISS, and John Lenon, as well as iconic movie characters like Freddy Krüeger, Tyler Durden from the movie Fight Club, and Count Dracula, stand as familiar representations of the mundane, anchoring us to the corporeal, providing us a sense of familiarity in a seemingly foreign and obscure place.

The thrust of Farley Del Rosario’s works lies in its ingenious ability to portray philosophical concepts rendered through whimsical and outlandish landscapes and characters. He injects a subtle sense of humor into our lenses, disarming the hierarchies that art has always tried to supersede. By reversing traditional concepts with playful wit, and heroes manifested through dreamlike renditions, Del Rosario’s works contain worlds of stories; surveyed and understood through the eyes of the innocent spectator.
