To say that Katrina Cuenca is merely a visual artist is an immense understatement. For it is through her narrative we are given an opportunity to view the world in a radiant light; to see such celestial beauty in it, rendered from organic memories and experiences as human beings. With this, Cuenca’s unyielding passion to create is unraveled – conveying the vulnerable parts of human experience into palpably divine pieces of artistic expression.

“Unraveling”, Cuenca’s latest exhibition at Galerie Joaquin Rockwell, offers perspectives anew on her much-celebrated figurations of graceful movement and flow. In this series, Cuenca’s propensity to experimentation shines within and beyond the canvas, as we are introduced to shapes and forms that add new and interesting layers to the overall visual experience. In particular, the artist plays with the concept of symmetry, with every enigmatic element mirroring itself, bouncing off each other to depict a kaleidoscopic dance. Her renowned forms akin to the graceful movements of flower petals and fish fins are staged in backdrops of gold and black – almost vanta black – ultimately transfixing the viewer’s perception.

At its core, Katrina Cuenca’s spiritual sentiment will always remain present in her ever-moving creations. Her artistic evolution is on the cusp of blossoming, revealing aspects of her fresh concepts, always dedicated to crafting elegant pieces that not only function as masterful works of art, but also as delicate keepsakes of the human experience.

This particular exhibit also marks significant milestones, coinciding with Cuenca’s birthday celebration and cover launch of Art Plus Magazine’s Issue 88.

Katrina Cuenca (b. 1984) is a self-taught artist who has been painting since the 90s. Experimenting with figures, patterns, and textures, Cuenca continuously rediscovers and evolves her art practice based on life experiences. The result is a melding of figuration and abstraction at its most spontaneous and celebratory.

To date, Katrina Cuenca has steadily built a name for herself in the visual arts field. She has had multiple well-received solo exhibitions and has participated in notable art fairs in the country such as ManilART (2020-2021), MoCAF (2022-2023), and Art Fair Philippines (2023).

“Unraveling” by Katrina Cuenca will run from January 20 – 29, 2024 with an Opening Reception, Birthday Celebration and Art Plus Cover Launch on January 20, Saturday at 5 PM.
