“Pas de Deux, A dance for two” by Jepoy and Astrid Almario

runs at Galerie Joaquin Rockwell from December 1-10, 2023

More than just a form of artistic expression that involves movement of the body, dance is a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, and is used to convey a wide range of emotions and ideas. It is a physical expression of inner emotion, a way for a dancer to generate these emotions and release them, transcending their ordinary selves. As such, a collaborative interaction of two dancers is a joint effort in bringing the distinctive individuality of each to the forefront, contributing to the overall of the performance.

In “Pas de Deux, a dance for two,” Jepoy and Astrid Castillo-Almario highlight and celebrate the beauty of dance and the dancers themselves. From realistic glimpses of scenes behind the curtain and on stage to the diaphanous femininity of the ballerina’s tutus, the exhibit aims to explore the enduring charm of dance. Jepoy Almario showcases the grace and strength of dancers in their lines, control and extensions through various poses and movements. The intricate renderings of the colorful costumes by Astrid Castillo-Almario highlight their ethereal, almost otherworldly quality and offer a romanticized perspective of the stories behind a dancer’s tutu.

Jepoy Almario (b. 1980, Manila) is a Filipino contemporary visual artist. Born into an art-loving family, Almario’s talent in the visual arts was honed at a very early age. At university, he studied Advertising at the College of Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas, where he received mentorship from prominent artists. After completing his studies, he took a hiatus from the visual arts scene to gain exposure in the fields of broadcasting, music, fashion and education. Even so, he set time to paint continuously to discover a style characterized by multiple images that implied manifold life options – an expression of his state of mind. He also learned about painting theory during his stint in the academe, an effort which would prime him for a resolute move to pursuing art full time.

In 2009, he became one of the Finalists of the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence Competition, which was pivotal in his pursuit of art as a profession. He has been part of countless group shows and art fairs and was able to participate in two international group exhibitions held in HongKong and New York, USA.

Astrid Castillo-Almario (b.1990) started painting at the age of 13. Influenced by her father and well-known Miniature Artist in the Philippines, the late Norris Castillo, Astrid started her art practice by painting landscapes, still-life and florals. She finished her Fine Arts – Major in Painting degree at the University of Santo Tomas in 2010, graduating with the "Best Thesis of the Year" Award. Her art influences include Shana Levenson and Serge Marshennikov. Castillo has participated in group shows both locally and abroad. She has had two solo exhibitions with Galerie Joaquin at its Podium and BGC galleries.

Jepoy and Astrid Castillo-Almario’s “Pas de Deux, a dance for Two” runs at Galerie Joaquin Rockwell from December 1-10, 2023 with an Artist Reception on December 2 at 5 pm.
