At the heart of the human experience lies a relentless, timeless impulse—an urge to create. This urge is the invisible force that drives artists to conceive and manifest, to conjure beauty and meaning from the ether of imagination.

The term “Poiesis,” with its roots in ancient Greek philosophy, holds a profound significance in the world of art. Derived from the word “poiein,” which means “to make” or “to create,” Poiesis represents the essence of artistic creation.

For Averil Paras’ latest exhibition, the artist pays homage to the fragility of memory. His works–seemingly caught in between the terrains of the temporal and fleeting, transcend the confines of the visual and venture into the realm of dreamlike poetry. Averil Paras positions himself as the author of these verses, where each work centers on various depictions of the human condition. In world that often reduces human relationships to mere transactions, the artist reminds us through his works the profound beauty that lies within each interaction.

Averil Paras’ “Poeisis” is a tribute to the undying human capacity to transcend the ordinary, to touch the empyrean, and to infuse the mundane with meaning. Paras has unwittingly–yet again, places himself at the forefront of Philippine visual arts, where in his most sincerest, takes the form of the divine, a testament to the incredible power of human creativity.

About the Artist

Emotions are the very means of our ability to make contact. That has always been a staple fixture in an Averil Paras painting. Paras provides the viewer pensive insights to reality by expressing his calculated observations of his surrounding environment as his paintings are permeated with life and realism.

Averil Paras has been capturing his audience’s attention through his stories carefully crafted in his paintings. A consistent Metrobank Art and Design Excellence finalist, he had formal training in Fine Arts (as an Advertising major) at FEATI University. His passion to transcribe stories onto his contemporary canvas has earned him spots in the Ateneo Art Auction for two successive years, and in the Asian Cultural Council (ACC) Auctions for three years.

“Poeisis” by Averil Paras will be on view from October 20 – 31, 2023 with an Artist Reception on October 25, Wednesday at 5 PM.
