“Kawes” by Jane Ebarle, on view at Galerie Joaquin Podium

Exhibit runs from July 19 – 30, 2023

Visual artist Jane Ebarle has had a long affinity for ethnic design. Dating back to her high school years, the artist was encouraged to explore different mediums of artistic creation by her father. From exploring the inner rudiments of ceramics to typewriting, Jane found a keen interest in fashion design when her father introduced her to a local modiste. She was taught the fundamentals of dressmaking, which led her to sew her own clothes in high school.

She pursued the art of painting – a hobby turned passion that blossomed from her lucrative two-decade career as the head of marketing at Faber-Castell and Dong-A Philippines. Through the years, her propensity for the tribal and ethnic designs in Mindanao had always been a core element in her body of work.

She coins the title “Kawes” for her latest exhibit, a Pangasinan word meaning “dress”. With intricate lines, familiar patterns, and bold strokes of color and texture, Ebarle creates the “Kawes” series derived from her experiences, influences, and personal tuitions. Deeply enamored with the rich designs of cultural heritage, her abstract works also represent the women of previous generations who labored and took care of homes in the family. Through “Kawes”, Ebarle universally speaks for those women and transverses generations; educating, at the same time, honoring the women who added great impact beyond the clothes they wore.

Jane Ebarle is an abstract artist who developed her signature style of painting and creating images through threads of paint, notable for her fine and meticulous execution. Her works have been labeled as “Hibla” abstracts which are very much akin to real fabric. Her accomplishments in art were the commissioned paintings that were given to the 25 heads of state who attended the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit (ASEAN) in Manila in November 2017. She launched her 8th solo show at The National Museum in 2015. She had solo shows at Asian Civilizations Museum in Singapore in 2011 and Philippine Center in New York in 2013. Ebarle acquired her Fine Arts Advertising degree from the University of Santo Tomas and was recently selected as one of the recipients of the 2023 Outstanding UST College of Fine Arts and Design Atelier Honorees.

“Kawes” is her 12th solo show.
