Female representation is one of the most powerful subjects in art and literature. Exploring the unique characteristics of a woman enables and empowers notions of strength found in their spirituality, vulnerability and prowess. These are traits most prominent in Aileen Lanuza’s body of work as she carries on the elusive energy of the female anima.

“Weaving Through the Delicate Anima” is an intimate underscoring of the female gaze, masked in the visual grandeur of floral arrangements. As each flower unveils its petals, Lanuza’s Maria Clara-like subjects also reveal a sense of emotional yielding – fleeting yet impressionable, mysterious yet compelling.

“The eyes are the windows to the soul”, as the saying goes. In this case, the artist creates a delicate but unbreakable connection with the viewers – amplifying one’s emotional sensibility through the subtlety of impression. These ideations can be seen in pieces such as “Intrepidus (Fearless)” and “Virtus (Valor)”, embodying the bold and the courageous through a striking gaze and further enlivened with an assortment of flowers in full bloom.

With these, Aileen Lanuza's passionate pursuits for dignified women are eminent and true in this latest exhibit. Consistently innovative with her concepts, Lanuza’s masterful works remain a testament to the gentle yet impactful mind, body, and soul of the female.

Aileen Lanuza’s works demonstrate how a woman’s mystique extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of gender appropriation. Completing her studies at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, her works are characterized by an atmosphere of the floral motif in which a sense of tenderness plays an important role. By making female portraits as subject matter, she expresses a current commentary on feminist values. Her works serve as an amplification of the new norms, making them a form of resistance against the logic of the misogynistic system.

“Weaving Through the Delicate Anima” by Aileen Lanuza will be on view at Galerie Joaquin Rockwell from June 9 – 19, 2023 with an Opening Reception scheduled on June 9, Friday at 5 PM.
