Throughout history, doors have been used as visual elements to communicate stories about adventure, mystery, transformation, and glory in artworks. From Lorenzo Ghiberti’s famed The Gates of Paradise, to René Magritte’s La Perspective Amoureuse, doors hold an important place both artistically and metaphorically within works of fine arts; they represent stepping into the unknown or taking control over one’s destiny, depending on which side of the door one finds oneself on. It signifies movement and transition that represent a possibility––an unlocked portal leading you somewhere new and unexplored.

“Portals of Perception” is a comprehensive look at the manifestations and various interpretations of doors and the boundless narratives that it hold. Veering away from the traditional use of canvas or paper, the artists for this show utilize actual doors to communicate creative interpretations of what might lie ahead. These interpretations allude to different aspects such as identity, fate, and different realms amongst other things. The physicality of the doors serves as barriers between accustomed reality and an alternate world that may be hidden behind them, waiting to be explored.

Paradoxically, these doors suggest both an entrance and an exit; a series of polar opposites. It can signify transformation and preservation, advance and retreat, apparent overtness or evocative mystery. Nonetheless, it is through these physical openings that viewers may explore connections between the internal and the external. Each artist discloses their own interpretation along with dream-like aspects from within themselves. It gives the solution to the problem raised by the door per se by showing what it is: an opening to a world of limitless possibilities.

The exhibit will showcase a collection of works featuring a lineup of renowned artists: Vic Bachoco, Jo Balbarona, Katrina Cuenca, Vincent De Pio, Patrick Esmao, Fitz Herrera, Aileen Lanuza, Kenneth Montegrande, Perfecto Palero Jr., Averil Paras, Aljo Pingol, Jun Rocha, Dominic Rubio, Aner Sebastian, and Ralph Villaluz.

“Portals of Perception” will be on view from January 21 – 31, 2023 with the artist reception scheduled on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at 5PM.
