View Heart Chants Gallery“Heart Chants” by Vic Secuya at Galerie Joaquin Podium Exhibit runs August 14 to 28
"From the heart arise unknowable impulses as well as conscious feelings, moods, and wishes. The heart, too, has its reasons and is the center of perception and understanding."
- Henri Nouwen
Victor Cabuga Secuya’s vibrant oeuvre explores the pulsating energies of the world formed from his cultural immersion and exposure of a country’s history and heritage. For the artist, the most compelling ideas and concepts often emanate from experiences completely different from his own. Secuya’s South African sojourn, a fundamental and moving experience that shook him to his core, profoundly shaped his philosophy and vision as a visual artist.
Moved by the presence and authenticity of African Art, Secuya aims to acknowledge and honor the culture that influenced his craft and enriched his identity. The artist blends elements of symbolical abstractions and figurations in his immersive and engulfing compositions, hoping to reveal the commonalities that bind humanity regardless of nationality and race. “Heart Chants” establishes a focus; the spirit is charged with the vibrations of components harmonizing together.
The essence of Secuya's art serves as an interaction of concepts-- communicated through sight and insight. His works seek to invite the viewer to a cultural mirror that reflects notions of nourishment, grounding, and inspiration. With all the facilities of his mind and spirit, Vic Secuya's goal is to celebrate the radiant soul of a community and culture that revealed the oneness of human existence. [text by Grace Ng]
Victor Cabuga Secuya (b. 1957) is a reclusive personality often misunderstood because of the directness in his people engagements and not- so- rare piercing interrogations that can force one into uncomfortable self-reflection. His former students of Humanities and Philosophy named him a terror; but for those who know him up close and personal, he is a warm guru who desires that every person be the best of himself. He values self-discipline, and while he loves being with people, he treasures solitude, being alone in his studio the most.
Secuya grew up in the seminary and in his teens became enamored by the quiet and simple lifestyle of the Buddhists, Taoists, and Trappist monks. Through the years, the artist honed his craft like a monk in the monastery. In silence and solitude, he embraced his art tightly and completely for the past 40 years. Mounting his 27th one-man at Galerie Joaquin is a testament of Vic Secuya's commitment to his craft.
“Heart Chants” by Vic Secuya will be on view from August 14 to 28, 2022 with the artist reception scheduled on August 16 at 5PM. Galerie Joaquin is located at the 3rd level of The Podium, ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City. For more information, contact +63 926 7227925, or email podium.galeriejoaquin@gmail.com.
