For “Resonance”, master abstractionist Raul Isidro focuses on spirituality, consciousness, and chronology, sharing the secrets of the unseen world and the beauty in the seen world. Using texture, layers, and spontaneous mark-making to reflect the complexity of human beings, Isidro’s paintings not only change the energy of the space they inhabit, but also encourage the viewer to explore beyond the five senses to the truth of one’s psyche.

The works for “Resonance” employ representational images of natural elements depicted in bold colors and gestural lines. Isidro draws on the viewer’s familiarity with these objects as a starting point for his exploration into their light and dark connotations. The artist’s latest series demonstrates his interest in the in-between of representation and abstraction-- with its swirling colors reminiscent of waves and mountains, and with hatched lines and color washes that defy naturalistic categorization.

Through his distinct language of lines and forms, Raul Isidro’s oeuvre conveys the complexity of thought and spiritual transcendence. The artist’s latest exhibit is a manifestation of the fundamental aspect of art as a unifying force. In artmaking, the threads are woven across centuries and around the globe to manifest something that one hopes to be both universal and deeply personal.

The veteran visual artist Raul Isidro (b. 1943) creates his poetic landscape abstractions using imagery culled from childhood vistas close to his heart; the meditative shapes and silhouettes encapsulating the movements of our ever-changing landscape.

With a life story that could trump most biographies, it was only Isidro’s fortitude that led him to where he is today. A celebrated artist and member of the community, the artist was awarded the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) in 1979, the Outstanding Samareño Award in 2011, and the Outstanding Thomasian Award in 2006.

Despite his more than 5 decades of artmaking, Raul Isidro never loses sight of the essential basics, which he believes firmly grounds his abstractions in past experiences. He takes simple elements of larger landscapes – trees, rocks, wind, and water – and projects abstract swathes of movement and color upon their image. The freedom of expression contained within natural boundaries results in an elegantly modernist masterpiece mirroring the limitless potentialities of humanity possessed by every individual.

“Resonance” is an exhibition presented by Galerie Joaquin featuring works by Raul Isidro.
