View Presence In Prism Gallery“Presence in Prism”, a solo exhibition of works by Gary Custodio, on view at Galerie Joaquin Podium
Show runs May 28 to June 7Gary Custodio is an artist whose central concern is the transformation and reconfiguration of space through painting. Beginning with the highly rationalized and objective language of architecture, Custodio disassembles its geometries to recreate new and multifaceted imagery resulting his works for “Presence in Prism”. The exhibit probes the relationships between both the physical and psychological aspects of the artist’s composition.
Geometric constructions often convey a sense of discovery, of being in the presence of something significant, or on the threshold of a complex world of things not well understood. Using gold and metallic hues, with his abstracted planes and lines, Custodio heightens this feeling and adds a rich alchemical dimension to the works.
The tension between the soft colors and the straight line, or the natural and the formal-- may be extended to a similar tension between the finite and the infinite, or the earthly realm of coming to be and passing away, and the eternal realm of forms. It also establishes relationships between the personal and the systematic, highlighting a disparity between the imagined and the real.
A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, Gary Custodio earned for himself various prestigious arts awards, two of which are grand prize distinctions in both the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Art Competition and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Art Competition. He was also a four time Metrobank Art and Design Excellence awardee. Aklan-based Custodio has prolifically staged solo shows in the Philippines and internationally. His current works are inspired by the Russian art constructivism movement as can be seen by his use of strictly formal elements.
