“Lunar Fête”: Celebrating the Year of the Metal Ox

Exhibit runs February 4 to 14 at Power Plant Mall

The Chinese New Year is popularly known as the Spring Festival, as it starts from the Beginning of Spring (the first of the twenty-four terms in coordination with the changes of Nature) and marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. It also marks a new year on the lunar calendar and represents the desire for a new life. The works for Galerie Joaquin’s latest exhibit “Lunar Fête” depict auspicious patterns and elements of prosperity and longevity -- commonly connected with the Spring Festival. The celebration of the Lunar New Year serves as an ushering of good fortune for the upcoming year.

According to the zodiac, this particular year will be protected by the sign of the Ox, together with its associated element of Metal – the element of bravery, righteousness, and steadfastness. Ox are diligent, determined and strong. Having great patience and determination, the Ox can achieve their goals with consistent efforts.

With an extensive repertoire of art, Galerie Joaquin forms the crux of the Spring Festival celebrations, in both visual and ideological forms. Based on folklore, the color red is considered to bring good luck and good fortune to all. With this, the Galerie also included crimson-colored artworks to mark the auspicious start of the lunar calendar. The exhibition offers a unique and enthusiastic insight into the vitality, originality and richness of the Filipino-Chinese culture and its influence in the modern milieu.
