“Lotus: Transcendence for the Awakened Mind”
Katrina CuencaKatrina Cuenca’s works for “Lotus” are motivated to translate more than simply an aesthetic quality of brushwork; she hopes that her feelings connect to the natural world through the depths of color and emotions. The artist describes her latest paintings as a derivative of the Lotus flower, an abstraction of its petals floating on water.
To some cultures, the Lotus Flower represents enlightenment, spiritual growth, and purity of body, speech and mind. It could be thought of as an awakened mind, which grows naturally towards the warmth and light of truth, love and compassion. They emerge clear and bright through the murky water and muddy depths to bloom most beautifully.
The conditions that produce the Lotus are not always ideal, but that never stops the flower from rising through adversity, opening its petals, and blossoming in the sun; a fitting juxtapose of the current challenges we are all facing.
Katrina Cuenca (b. 1984) is a self-taught artist who has been painting since the 90’s. Cuenca likes experimenting with different figures, patterns and textures in her paintings. Her works are heavily influenced by artists she looks up to, as well as music she listens to, and the people she meets. She likes to paint with vibrant, expressive colors, and also enjoys painting strange, other worldly figures and patterns.
