Jun Sergio Rocha’s works for “PI.LI.PINO” take pride in the continued promotion of artistic excellence, cultural values, Filipino aesthetics and national identity towards a humanistic society. His oeuvre mainly represents Filipino genre painting, celebrating key features of high and popular culture–beauty, nostalgia, pageantry, the fantasy of how the Philippines was, and the dream of how it should be.

His motif for painting landscapes, portraits, and everyday scenes with local folks depicted as simple yet composed and regal in doing diligent albeit mundane day-to-day activities such as selling goods, going to the market, planting rice, etc. have been themes welcomed in the walls of collectors both local and foreign.

The title is a modern take on the Filipinos’ shift from the depicted bygone period to the “.com” era. The works for “PI.LI.PINO” is a result of Rocha’s luminous and ideal treatment of Philippine genre and landscape subjects, vital imageries from the past up until the present. His paintings feature individuals in local costumes, scenes of rice planting and harvesting, genre and social portraits, and female merchants with delicate smiles. The artist’s flair for familiar local imagery–coupled with the popularity of the themes–glorify community life and love of country, and vividly record the legendary courage our ancestors and our glorious past. His positive pastoral images are an homage to the continuous promotion of our positive traits as a people of both perseverance and zealousness depicted in his paintings.

Jun Sergio Rocha (b. 1956) took up BS Chemistry at the Manila Central University. His love for visual arts, however, took him to another direction. In 1989, Rocha took up watercolor painting at the American Academy of Arts and oil painting at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. He became a member of the Palette and Chisel Art Academy and the Plein Art Painters of Chicago. In 2002, he received an Outstanding Community Artist Award from the City Mayor of Chicago. After more than two decades abroad, Rocha came back to his native Philippines where he continues to showcase his talent for the arts.

“PI.LI.PINO” by Jun Rocha will be on view from January 10 to 20, 2020 with the Artist Reception scheduled for Thursday, January 16 at 6PM.
