LANUZA’S MYSTIFYING FEMMES EXHIBITS AT GALERIE JOAQUIN PODIUM

Exploring pure and unadulterated femininity, artist Aileen Lanuza captures the mystery and emotion of a woman conveying the quality of strength and quiet fortitude in her solo exhibit Piercing the Veil.

Lanuza explores the relationship between conventional tenets of the female psyche and contemporary ethics. With such diverse influences, she creates new insights from both orderly and random perspectives on women.

Examining Lanuza’s works in Piercing the Veil, one can decipher the ephemeral nature of a female gaze. What starts out as a meek attempt for attention soon becomes manipulated by the artist into a hegemony of strength, resilience, and perhaps even dominance; leaving the onlooker a sense of allure and the possibility of a new outlook of the stereotypical Maria Clara.

Lanuza’s works demonstrate how a woman’s mystique extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of gender appropriation. Her works are characterized in an atmosphere of floral motif in which a sense of tenderness plays an important role. By making female portraits as subject matter, she expresses a current commentary of feminist values. Her works serving as an amplification to the new norms, making it a form of resistance against the logic of the misogynistic system.

Aileen completed her studies at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts (2003) where she was a consistent college scholar graduating with honors. She has received recognition as one of the five best entries in an art competition at Malacanang Palace hosted by then President of the Philippines Fidel V. Ramos (1992), 2nd Honorable Mention at an art competition of the Manila Midtown Hotel (1993), Finalist at the Nationwide Caltex Sci-art competition and an awardee of McCann Erickson (2002). She has participated in over 30 group exhibitions

Her paintings have been included in auction houses Larasati, Masterpiece and Borobudur, and have been featured in publications such as “A Treasury of Philippine Nudes”, “Larasati, Pictures of Asia”, and “100 Years, 100 nudes” by the UP Alumni Centennial celebration.
