Abstract artist Rosscapili, embarks on a milestone exhibition celebrating his 40 years in art. Appropriately titled “IlluminEssence,” Capili attempts to explore the interplay between abstract composition and emotion. The exhibit which opens at the prestigious Shangri-La Plaza’s East Wing’s Atrium on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 6 p.m., is organized by Galerie Joaquin. For more information, please call (632) 723-9418, or visit www.galeriejoaquin.com This exhibit is about light, radiance, glow, and the tactile feel of touch,” explains the artist, who is one of the most renowned practitioners of abstraction in the country. This is why the show is titled “IlluminEssence” which combines the words “illumination” and “essence.” Rosscapili has had over thirty one-man exhibitions, in France, the US, Malaysia, and, of course, the Philippines. He has exhibited in a variety of media, including painting, photography, and digital art. He has also accumulated at least 57 awards and distinctions, including the Jurors’ Choice in the 1994 Philip Morris Asean Art Awards, the 2001 Pamana ng Lahi Award in San Francisco, USA, and the 2009 Ani Ng Dangal Presidential Award. “My philosophy in abstraction, says Capili, “is beyond the paint drips and paint splashes,” he says. “The viewer can see the surface, splashes of paint, the thick impasto of application, bright attractive colors or the absence of colors, and the beauty of the frame.”The artist believes that these are basic components of an abstract artwork and can be done by anyone. In this exhibition, he continues his examination of abstraction as a platform for a practice based upon the combined power of technique, compositional nous, and nostalgic resonance. Sixteen new works of acrylic mixed media - including 6 acrylic sheetglass “night light” oven-baked sculptures – will be on display to demonstrate the artist’s philosophy. What I try to paint as abstract are the underlying emotions of the artist and the spirituality behind my subjects. In my work there is always the challenge whereby the artist has to control the medium, and not let the medium control him.”

Rosscapili prefers to orchestrate, in the manner of a chromatic conductor, the elements of his art. From out of amorphousness, the artist directs the disposition of his shapes, colors and visual energies.”

This dedication to the cerebral aspects of art production, not to mention the drive and talent to push the scope of abstraction, defines Rosscapili’s career. Forged in this environment, the artist has built a legacy that spans four decades, with no outward signs of slowing down. Possessing a talented mind driven to continue to experiment and grow, it is thrilling to see what the artist is coming up with next.
