“Nagomi” by Vince De Pio
Galerie Joaquin Rockwell
January 26 – February 4, 2026
Inspired by the Japanese concept of “Nagomi”—a state of harmony achieved through balance and acceptance—this exhibition presents Vince De Pio’s recent explorations of emotional equilibrium amid intensity. Rather than depicting calm as stillness, the artist approaches harmony as a condition negotiated through movement, pressure, and release. The works situate the human form within dynamic fields of color and gesture, where tension and resolution coexist.
Across the paintings, figures appear partially dissolved into sweeping currents of pigment. Draped forms, elongated limbs, and swirling passages of color suggest bodies in motion, shaped by both internal force and external flow. These compositions resist fixed identity, instead proposing the self as fluid and responsive. Accents of dense, textured paint interrupt smoother passages, creating visual contrasts that echo the exhibition’s concern with balance formed through opposition.
De Pio’s painterly language is central to this inquiry. Broad, rhythmic brushstrokes establish momentum, while layered color—ranging from deep blues and blacks to vivid reds and golds—marks emotional registers rather than descriptive space. The figures do not occupy defined environments; instead, they emerge from painterly atmospheres that blur boundaries between body and ground. This abstraction allows the works to operate less as representations and more as experiential states.
Through this exhibit, Vince De Pio frames harmony as an active, ongoing process. His works suggest that equilibrium is not the absence of conflict, but the capacity to move through it with awareness and resilience. In this sense, the exhibition offers a nuanced interpretation of “Nagomi”: a strength formed through acceptance, adaptability, and sustained inner balance.
