"PAPIER" OPENS AT GALERIE FRANCESCA Thursday April 19, 2007

Major Artists Explore Paper as a Medium for Major Works

Galerie Francesca opens "Papier" (Artworks on Paper) on Thursday , April 19, 2007. The show features artists who have done outstanding work on paper namely Juvenal Sanso, Mario Parial, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, Lydia Velasco, Carlo Magno and Karina Baluyut.

Each of the artists have prepared seven works each for the exhibit. The participating artists join Galerie Francesca in emphasizing that paper is not an inferior medium to canvas and that major artworks can also be done using paper as a medium.

Galerie Francesca is located at Unit 2B-2C, Treasure Trove at the 3rd Level of Festival Supermall in Alabang, Muntinglupa City with telephone number 809-8495 and can be contacted at the following email address: galeriefrancesca001@yahoo.com.ph. The show runs until May 3, 2007 while preview starts Sunday, April 15, 2007.

Sanso believes that paper has its own charm. "The colors I use come out brighter on paper." Pariall, on the other hand, enjoys it precisely because it is a different medium from canvas altogether. "Artists always consider it an interesting challenge when they are asked to make artworks of different media."

Karina Baluyut says "I get a different effect when I use paper compared to canvas" while Carlo Magno notes that "I end up using different materials altogether when I make my mixed media works on paper instead of on canvas."

Collectors usually express concern that paper may not last as long as works on canvas but to this Sanso says "all we need to do is remind ourselves that Chinese scroll paintings made several years ago are still very much around and have survived the travails of time and weather."
