PAGSIBOL: FULL FLOWERING OF PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY ART IN NEW YORK AND TORONTO

PAGSIBOL : Full Flower is an international exhibition of three Philippine-based artists whose common aesthetic trait of fusing Western figurative art and Asian socio-cultural sensibility uniquely qualifies them as visionaries of an interconnected global culture where the Everywhere becomes not bland and ordinary, but blazingly colorful and extraordinary. Wielding an oftentimes iconic rendition of traditionally-garbed Filipinos, the three artists of the exhibition, Mario Parial, Dominic Rubio, and Lydia Velasco have each expertly re-interpreted the figurative genre of Philippine Art into contemporary perspectives on the status of the universal human subject as either a surreally nostalgic trip to a colonial but comforting past; a paradisiacal ennoblement of the countryside peasant’s life; or the heroic visage of tropical Womanhood in all of her sensuous, fleeting, and yet empowering moods.
