MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART 2008
Galerie Joaquin will present "Modern & Contemporary Philippine Art: A Group Show" at its Main Gallery, in a show that opens Saturday, July 12 7:00 p.m. and runs until July 23, 2008. Galerie Joaquin Main is located at 371 P. Guevarra st. corner Montessori Lane, Addition Hills, San Juan, with website www.galeriejoaquin.com and phone 723-9253 and 723-9418.
In commemoration of its chairman’s 55th birth anniversary, Galerie Joaquin will feature 55 artworks from some of the country’s leading modern and contemporary artists. Most of the artists included are those who already enjoy a following in the international art scene or are among the top artists of the Galerie Joaquin group of galleries. Many of them are popular names in the Southeast Asian auction circuit. Preview starts July 6, 2008.
According to Arlene Sta. Ana, the curator of the project, "in the light of the auction fever currently sweeping the Southeast Asian art market, what we tried to do is put together a collection of auction worthy artworks not only from the masters or important artists who are already included at auction, we also tried to select artworks by artists who, due to their talent we believe in no time at all, will be gaining international recognition."
"We’d like to present a different side of Galerie Joaquin", says Sta. Ana. Through the years the gallery has come to be known both locally and internationally for carrying works of masters such as Arturo Luz, Juvenal Sanso, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, Nena Saguil and HR Ocampo." For this particular show we’d like to add a different collection of works that are more on the cutting edge. Collectors call it dangerous or challenging art, that is, art that excites the imagination." We have works from Eufemio Rasco IV (The Sentinel), Jaspher Penuliar (the Foretelling of Optimism), Jerry Morada (Line Between Surprise and Discovery), Jovan Benito (A Man and a Woman) and Edwin Tres Reyes (When it Rains, it Pours). We have a very interesting Lydia Velasco - her take on the Mona Lisa painted with the mysticism of today’s modern woman - a 4 feet x 6 feet work titled Mona Mystica. We were able to find a very interesting work from Jerri Duenas titled The Fruit (Kawangis), a two-piece sculpture of Glenn Cagandahan with the strong message that one doesn’t need to look or debonair or European to be a saint (Modern Day Saints), and works from a new discovery of the Galerry, Lois Goff with her Women at the Sauna and Light on the Horizon".
Sta. Ana continues, "Although we are including some works from the masters as well as from our senior artists, we decided to look for works that are either rare, different, or may have never been seen before. Included in the show is a 24" x 36" Arturo Luz work that has three nude women in black and ochre, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz’s major work on canvas titled Two Moon Series, HR Ocampo’s Abstraction, 2 pieces from Mario Parial’s new collection, and two works titled Torso and Tides of Fortune III by Ramon Orlina who has just came back from a sold-out show in Singapore.
Also in the show are Dominic Rubio’s signature long-necked figures depicting scenes of Old Asia, Old Manila and the Southern Philippines, the summery colored oils from Joselito Dayono and mixed media works from abstract artists Carlo Magno and Karina Baluyut. The complete list of artists with works featured in the show are: Aldrino Abes, Bayani Ray Acala, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, Karina Baluyut, Amador Barquilla, Jovan Benito, Ferdie Cacnio, Michael Cacnio, Glenn and Odette Cagandahan, Nell Campos, Jigger Cruz, Joselito Dayono, Vincent de Pio, Chubern di Loretto, Gerri Dueñas, Lois Goff, Aileen Lanuza, Arturo Luz, Carlo Magno, Jerry Morada, HR Ocampo, Carlo Ongchangco, Ramon Orlina, Mario Parial, Jaspher Penuliar, Aljo Pingol, Eufemio Rasco IV, Dominic Rubio, Gil Sakay, Juvenal Sanso, Juanito Torres, Edwin Tres Reyes and Lydia Velasco. |
