Arturo Luz at Galerie Joaquin Main
This November, National Artist Arturo Rogero Luz turns 80.
The country’s leading cultural institutions, including the National Commission of Culture and the Arts (NCCA), National Museum, Metropolitan Museum, Design Center of the Philippines, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Ayala Museum and Ateneo Art Gallery plan no less than eight celebrations and tributes to this great artist.
The show range from retrospectives of paintings, prints and sculptures, and exhibits on the life of Luz, including an interpretation of his works in song, dance and music.
Galerie Joaquin Main, together with leading figures in private sector and Luz’s major collectors, has calendared a special exhibit titled “Arturo Luz: Major Works, Temples and Object of the Past.” The show on Nov. 18 at 6p.m., features 35 works of Luz done from 1991 to the present. It is a show put together in honor of the master by collectors for collectors.
“Major Works, Temples and Object of the Past” is a follow-up to the highly acclaimed and successful show “Temples, Performers and Cities of the Past” which opened last June. This show features a new collection, with many of the larger works never having been exhibited before.
Galerie Joaquin Main is at 371 P. Guevarra St. corner Montessori Lane in San Juan. Call 7239253 or 7239418; visit www.galeriejoaquin.com
The National Commission on Culture and the Arts, meanwhile, mounts an exhibit on Nov. 14 on the life of Luz as National Artist and his contributions to the collective practice of museum work.
The Cultural Center of the Philippines hosts two projects: “Luz, Let There be Light,” an event where the audience will witness performances by theater artists, dancers and musicians inspired by the works of Luz. There will also be a show at the Bulwagang Juan Luna Gallery titled “Prints/Imprints” featuring fine prints from the CCP Collection of Luz work, as well as those by selected contemporary artists inspired by the artistry of Luz.
The Metropolitan Museum will open “A Light in the Museum” on Nov. 23, an exhibit that will explore the parameter and vectors of the agency Luz and his continuing influence in the conceptual framework of the Museum. The Ayala Museum will mount an exhibit on Nov. 27 reviewing selected works by Arturo Luz in the buildings of fellow National Artist and modernist Leandro Locsin, while the Ateneo Art Gallery will show a retrospective of drawings and paintings of Luz from the 1950s to the 1960s. |
