MADONNA CON NIÑO OPENS MAY 20 AT GALERIE JOAQUIN PODIUM

As part of the festivities for National Heritage Month, Galerie Joaquin Podium presents 18 paintings from leading contemporary artists such as Mario Parial, Angel Cacnio, Lydia Velasco, Dominic Rubio, Nell Campos, Jovan Benito, Vincent de Pio, Aileen Lanuza, and Aljo Pingol. The show titled "Madonna con Niño" features works on the theme of a mother’s love for her child. It opens on May 20, 2008 and runs until June 3, 2008 at Galerie Joaquin Podium located at Unit B12-B13, Lower Ground Level The Podium, ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center Mandaluyong City.

According to Ciara Andrea Cruz, Galerie Joaquin’s Operations Director, "we would like to underscore one of our leading cultural traits which makes us truly Filipino – a mother’s unselfish and unbridled love for her children."

Madonna and child in the visual arts has been a much revered tradition for several centuries now. These types of representational art appeared in the catacombs of the early Christians. Initially the concept of mother and child was a religious interpretation, upright and formal. With the influence of the Franciscans, however, the image of the Madonna became softer and more tender starting in the thirteenth century.

For this show, Galerie Joaquin Podium is presenting artists with their own unique and contemporary interpretation of a mother and child.
