HK BASED ARTIST NOEL DE GUZMAN OPENS PREMIERE SHOW IN MANILA
"Color Caprice" opens July 27 at Galerie Joaquin Main
With his recent successful sold-out exhibition titled "Tactile Mind" at the Karin Weber Gallery in Hong Kong, internationally renowned artist Noel de Guzman is slated to have a special exhibit in Manila. He is bringing 12 of his multicolored abstractions for a bigger and more riveting exhibition on July 27, Thursday, 7:00 p.m. at The Centre Gallery of Galerie Joaquin Main. Titled "Color Caprice", the show is the seventh solo exhibition of the artist and his premiere show at Galerie Joaquin Main.
De Guzman’s passion for the arts dawned at a very tender age. Raised in Manila, he pursued a degree in Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines and thereafter worked with multinational advertising agencies to become an art director. Establishing a notable reputation for creating award winning print ads and television commercials, he moved to Hong Kong in 1993 to work for regional publications such as Hong Kong Tatler and FinanceAsia.
It was in Hong Kong where he finally pursued his obsession in the arts, painting with his fingers as a personal way of expression. He has abandoned other tools for creating art such brushes, spatula, and chisel among others to devote himself with the most basic tool, the human hand.
Galerie Joaquin is located at 371 P. Guevarra St. cor. Montessori Lane, Addition Hills, San Juan, Metro Manila. For inquiries, call 723-9253 or 723-9418. Log on to www.galeriejoaquin.com.
"Painting with fingers is pure and personal" is the artist’s philosophy. He believes that the sense of touch is a compellingly powerful and extraordinary way of experiencing painting. The moment the paint passes through and in between his fingers, and motions the playful yet significant manipulation of paint by the hand, the entire process creates not only a visually stimulating experience but also a tactile and sensual encounter.
In his art, he also underscores the relevance of incorporating the human element. It is through this "human element in doing things" that he has produced works that he considers most personal and purest. His unconventional technique of using his bare hands has since then received the attention and admiration of the international public including a strong following in Singapore where he held a successful exhibition.
De Guzman’s ideas and artistic inspirations flow freely from his subconscious into the canvas. He creates his inspired and almost lyrical themes by laying his canvas on the floor and approaching it from four sides. He likens his explorations in painting with fingers to the unrestricted and free flowing strokes of children captured by their finger painting. His philosophy is akin to what the great French artist Henri Matisse said that it took him an entire lifetime to learn how to paint like a child.
Twelve interesting pieces including 48" x 36" "Red Amazon", "Far Eastern Time", and "Baguio Blur" are showcased in the exhibition. De Guzman brings to the show a harmony of vibrant, striking, and luxuriant colors such as solid reds, fertile greens, brilliant yellows and calming pastels bound to amuse and surprise the eye. He plays heavily with texture to expose drama in his works as well as match his rich color palette.
"Color Caprice" runs until August 10. The exhibition is De Guzman’s personal way of sharing his international accomplishments with Filipinos.
