Vista chosen as resident artist for Singapore gallery
Bernard Vista goes international as he flies to Singapore this April to be the artist-in-residence at the Artesan Gallery. He is set to paint several works while he stays at Artesan for three weeks in preparation for his major solo exhibition scheduled in Singapore in June of this year.
Based on the artist’s perspective, Vista will attempt to interpret Singaporean culture as well as the Singaporean way of life on his canvas and infuse it with Filipino art through his cubist renditions brought to life by his unique figurative style and dramatic interplay of rich earth colors. He will also facilitate an art workshop for beginners and advanced students who are keen in absorbing his style, medium, and technique.
One of Pakil, Laguna’s more exciting figurative artists, he gained recognition in the arts for his larger than life depictions of the Filipino way of life, highlighting the rich customs and traditions of Filipinos passed on from one generation to the next. Inspired by the rural scenes of his hometown, he puts on canvas the humble countenance of his people, human figures of fisher folks and farmers, characteristic of their passion for life and oneness with the bounties of nature. His portrayals of men and women possess a glimmer of indescribable peace, contentment, and strength of inner spirit while the activities and details by which his subjects are immortalized solidify the Filipinos’ sense of enjoyment and admirable trait of counting their blessings.
In the Philippines, Vista is represented by Galerie Joaquin. His next engagement in Manila is a thematic group exhibition on music entitled “La Musique IV” which will open at Galerie Joaquin in San Juan on May 16.
Vista was a scholar of the Saturday Group of Artists under National Artist Cesar Legaspi. He took up Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas and worked as an artist-designer for a trading company shortly after. He moved on as a children’s book illustrator and an art director for a publishing company prior to his career as a fulltime painter. Vista is a founding member of the Guevarra Group of Artists.
