Parial’s ‘Pasasalamat’

“PASASALAMAT,” an exhibit featuring works by internationally renowned artist and former art professor Mario Parial opens at 6:30 tonight at The Center Gallery, Galerie Joaquin-Main.

Aptly titled “Pasasalamat,” this show celebrates his inclusion among the top 10 Filipino artists in the 20th anniversary auction of Sotheby’s in Singapore last October 9. He joined National Artists Fernando Amorsolo, H.R. Ocampo, Ang Kiukok, and Arturo Luz as well as Juvenal Sanso and Romeo Tabuena.

Parial feels there is much to be thankful for. Three years ago, he had a slipped disc. The pain was excruciatingly severe he could barely sit down more so paint. Fortunately, with therapy and a good set of doctors he was able to recover. In fact, he has found a greater momentum to make better and inspired artworks resulting in Sotheby’s selection of one of his paintings for inclusion in their most recent auction.

In “Pasasalamat,” notable pieces include a 30” x 24” “Honey Vendor”, a huge 30” x 40” “Two Women with Eight Horses”, a 24” x 18” “Mother & Child of the Bamboo”, “Ang Pamilya” which is a 20” x 30” harvest painting, “Pahiyas Festival” and “Flower Vendors” which are both 32” x 36” in size and a 24” x 36” version of the Sotheby’s entry “Nine Fishes”.

“Pasasalamat” runs until January 2. It features works in oil on canvas and several works in oil on paper. It is his 20th one-man show and is also a tribute to his artistic achievements. Last year, he was the recipient of The Most Outstanding Alumni Award of his alma mater Roosevelt High.

Parial has won in numerous art contests since his college years and has participated in 40 local and international group exhibits. He has exhibited in Hong Kong, China, Germany, Canada, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United States. His Marian works have been featured in two international books on the subject along with artworks done by Da Vinci, El Greco, Michaelangelo, and Raphael.

Parial studied at the University of Sto. Tomas and became faculty member at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts. He is known for works bursting with color, patterns and optimism, with gold highlights which has become his trademark.
